Damon Flanagan

Teacher of violin

Damon Flanagan was born in Southampton in 1980. He began his musical education based on the Susuki method. At the age of 16 he became concertmaster of the Southampton Youth Orchestra, leading them on three european tours and playing Vivaldi Concertos on numerous occasions. Damon studied on the Hampshire Specialist Music course where he gained an A for music performance at A Level. From 1998-2003 Damon studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Professor Simon Fischer receiving his Bachelor and Masters degree. His studies were completed in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the eminent soloist Ilya Grubert.

Damon won first prize in two prestigious chamber music competitions at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and his string quartet was chosen for events with the Lord Mayor of London and The Queen.

In 2005 Damon became violin teacher at Charles Edward Brookes School in Lambeth. During his tenure the school quickly became a 'music college' status school. In January 2011 Damon visited the Jersey Academy of Music as a specialist violin teacher to kick start their new string programme. Damon now runs a successful private teaching practicein london.

His freelance orchestral career started with engagements with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and English National ballet in 2005. He now regularly performs with such orchestras as: Royal Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony. He had played principal violin with Opera North and sub principal with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. He regularly performs at the BBC Proms and such soloists as Nigel Kennedy and Jose Carreras.

Damon's work in the Pop and TV sector has seen appearances on BBC Children in Need with Take That and BBC Sports Personality of the Year as well as DVDs and albums with The Priests, Pet Shop Boys, War of the Worlds and Kylie Minogue.
